Projects
In this attic it showcases a full insulation upgrade designed to maximize energy efficiency and comfort. I began by applying 2 inches of closed-cell spray foam to the top of the sheetrock, creating an airtight moisture barrier to block heat loss from the living space below.
There was a small gable wall that required 3 inches of spray foam per Minnesota code, as shown in the photos. Previously, insulation wasn’t necessary on that side because it bordered the exterior. However, with a new addition built on the other side, moisture was leaking in—so sealing it properly became essential for maintaining energy efficiency.
As shown in the photos, I also built protective boxes (which were also sprayed) around the 6 recessed can lights, ensuring safe clearance and easy future access for fixture changes or maintenance.
Since the 2" of spray foam gave an R value of 14, to achieve the target R-49 value, we then blew in an additional 12 inches of loose-fill fiberglass on top of the foam. Lastly, we sealed the attic access with an R-49 fiberglass batt, eliminating a common source of heat escape.
This layered approach ensures long-term savings, improved home comfort, and a professionally finished attic space.
